Multiple schools in Pennsylvania could close Thursday

PENNSYLVANIA — School officials across parts of northwestern Pennsylvania are watching weather forecasts as light snow showers are expected to continue through Thursday evening, raising the possibility that some districts could cancel classes or delay openings.

The latest forecast from the National Weather Service shows persistent light snow showers across inland northwestern Pennsylvania, with total snowfall of 1 to 2 inches likely in many communities, including Erie, Edinboro, Meadville and Corry. Accumulations above an inch can make roads slick and slow bus routes, particularly on untreated rural roads where drifting and snow-covered surfaces are most likely.

School closure decisions in the region are typically based on road conditions, visibility and how safe travel is expected to be during morning bus runs. Districts generally cite concerns such as snow-covered or icy roads that won’t improve before noon, hazardous travel conditions, or transportation issues that cannot be resolved in time for a delayed start.

While forecasters say impacts are expected to be minimal overall, even light accumulations overnight and into Thursday morning could prompt some districts — especially those with long rural bus routes — to consider delaying or canceling school if conditions deteriorate.

Parents and students are advised to monitor local school district announcements early Thursday morning for any closure or delay notices.
