Multiple schools in Pennsylvania announce closures for Monday

PENNSYLVANIA — A powerful winter storm bringing heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain and dangerously cold conditions across much of the state has prompted extensive school closures, delays and remote learning plans for Monday, January 26, 2026.

With winter weather warnings and snow emergencies in effect from western to eastern Pennsylvania, local officials and school administrators are acting to protect students, families and staff from hazardous travel conditions.

In southeastern Pennsylvania, including the Philadelphia region, all School District of Philadelphia schools — as well as early childhood centers and district offices — are closed Monday due to expected heavy snowfall and slick roads. Archdiocesan elementary schools are closed, and some high schools are transitioning to flexible or virtual instruction. Other districts across Bucks, Montgomery and surrounding counties have also announced closures or remote learning days as part of the winter weather response.

Across western Pennsylvania, districts including Pittsburgh Public Schools have canceled in-person classes Monday because of the storm’s impact, marking a scheduled snow day under the district’s calendar. Many school systems throughout the region have similarly announced closures and travel delays as heavy snow and icy roads make conditions treacherous.

Officials in central and northern counties have also reported snow emergencies, with many local school districts opting to close or shift to remote learning to ensure safety. State and local authorities continue to monitor road conditions and forecasts, with some counties under formal winter weather or snow emergency declarations.

The winter storm is expected to continue into Monday, with additional snowfall and potential ice accumulations, making travel risky for early morning commuters. Families are urged to check with their local school districts for the most up-to-date information throughout the day, as additional closures or schedule changes may be announced.
