Multiple schools in Ohio could close due to cold temperatures

OHIO — Ohio schools may face closures next week due to an impending polar vortex bringing dangerously low temperatures across the state.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for central Ohio, including Franklin County, effective from 1:00 AM EST Monday through 10:00 AM EST Wednesday.

During this period, temperatures could drop as low as -20°F (-29°C), posing significant risks such as frostbite and hypothermia.

While Ohio does not have a statewide policy mandating school closures at specific temperatures, individual districts often make decisions based on local conditions.

For instance, Bexley City Schools typically close when temperatures reach -15°F (-26°C) or when sustained wind chills drop to -22°F (-30°C).

Given the anticipated extreme cold, parents and students are advised to monitor announcements from local school districts regarding potential closures or delays.

Residents should also take precautions against the severe weather, including limiting outdoor exposure and ensuring proper home heating.
