Multiple schools in North Carolina to close this week

NORTH CAROLINA — Many public schools across North Carolina are expected to be closed in observance of Good Friday in 2026, based on a review of district calendars statewide.

Good Friday falls on April 3, 2026. It is recognized as an official state holiday in North Carolina, with state offices closed. However, public school calendars are set locally by individual districts, meaning there is no single statewide closure policy.

A review of multiple school systems shows that many districts will not hold classes that day. In Burke County Public Schools, April 3 is listed as “Good Friday/Holiday,” with no school for students.

Other districts follow a similar approach. Orange County Schools lists April 3 as both a Good Friday holiday and part of spring break, with no classes scheduled. Dare County Schools also identifies Good Friday as a holiday with no classes.

Additional systems, including districts in Franklin County and others, show “no school” or “holiday” designations for Good Friday, often alongside spring break closures. Some districts, such as those represented by BCS calendars, explicitly note that school buildings will be closed for the holiday.

Because North Carolina school calendars are determined locally, there is no centralized statewide list of closures. However, district schedules reveal a consistent pattern: the majority of public schools will be closed on Good Friday 2026, either as a designated holiday or because it falls within spring break.

Families are advised to check with their local district for exact schedules, as a small number of systems may structure their calendars differently.
