NORTH CAROLINA — A major water main break Wednesday morning is causing widespread disruptions across Polk County, with repairs expected to take several hours.
County officials reported that the 12-inch water main ruptured near the intersection of Highway 9 and Coxe Road in Green Creek around 8 a.m. The Inman-Campobello Water District, which provides water utility services in the area, estimates repairs will take six to eight hours.
Residents and businesses north of the Green Creek Fire Department may experience low water pressure or a complete loss of service. Polk County Schools confirmed that Polk Central Elementary, Sunny View Elementary, and Polk County Middle School are affected, with water service shut off at these campuses. Students at these schools were dismissed at 10 a.m., while other schools continued normal schedules.
A boil water advisory will go into effect Thursday, October 30, once water service is restored. Students are advised to bring filled water bottles, as water fountains will remain closed.
Other affected locations include the Tryon Equestrian Center, Polk County Department of Social Services, Department of Health and Human Services buildings, and the Derbyshire area near Highway 9.
