Multiple schools in North Carolina announce closures for Wednesday

NORTH CAROLINA — Many school systems across North Carolina have announced closures, remote learning days and delays for Wednesday as communities continue to deal with hazardous conditions following a major winter storm.

In the Piedmont Triad and surrounding regions, several districts will not hold in-person classes Wednesday: Alleghany County, Randolph County and Rockingham County schools will be closed for all students and staff, while many others will shift to remote or virtual learning.

Alamance-Burlington, Asheboro City, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, Guilford County, Mount Airy City, Montgomery County, Davidson County, Davie County, Elkin City, Lexington City, Stokes County, Surry County, Orange County, Wilkes County and Yadkin County schools are among those observing remote learning days rather than traditional classes.

Catawba County Schools and Hickory City Schools will also operate on remote instruction Wednesday, and Newton-Conover City Schools will follow a similar remote schedule, with all related extracurricular programs canceled. Burke County Public Schools will remain closed for the day because icy conditions continue to make travel unsafe.

In Charlotte-Mecklenburg, officials announced that all schools will have a remote learning day Wednesday due to lingering winter weather impacts. Physical school buildings will remain closed, and students will complete assignments online.

School officials throughout the state advised families to check directly with local districts for the latest updates, as conditions remain dangerous on many secondary roads, and additional closings or schedule changes may be announced.
