Multiple schools in Maryland to close this week

MARYLAND — Many public schools across Maryland are expected to be closed in observance of Good Friday in 2026, based on a review of district calendars from around the state.

Good Friday falls on April 3, 2026. While it is recognized as a state holiday in Maryland, public school calendars are set locally by each school system rather than through a single statewide schedule.

A review of several major districts shows that many schools will not hold classes that day. In Prince George’s County Public Schools, April 3 is listed as part of “Spring Break/Easter Holidays,” with schools and offices closed.

Other districts follow a similar pattern. In Montgomery County Public Schools, spring break runs through April 3, meaning students and staff are already off on Good Friday. Anne Arundel County Public Schools also lists schools and central offices closed from April 1 through April 6 for spring break, which includes Good Friday.

In Howard County Public Schools, April 3 is specifically marked as a day when schools and offices are closed during spring break. Charles County Public Schools explicitly lists “Good Friday” as a holiday with schools and offices closed, followed by Easter Monday closures.

Additional systems, including St. Mary’s County and Washington County Public Schools, also show closures on April 3 as part of spring break or a designated holiday.

Because Maryland school calendars are determined locally, there is no centralized statewide list of closures. However, district schedules show a clear and consistent trend: the majority of public schools across the state will be closed on Good Friday 2026, either as a designated holiday or because it falls within spring break.

Families are advised to check with their local district for exact schedules, as a small number of systems may structure their academic calendars differently.
