Multiple schools in Maryland announce closures for Monday

MARYLAND — A powerful winter storm that brought heavy snow, ice and dangerously cold temperatures across the state and the Washington, D.C. region has led to extensive school closures and delays for Monday, January 26, 2026 as officials work to address hazardous travel conditions and icy roads.

Across central Maryland, many school systems have announced that students will not attend in-person classes Monday due to lingering winter conditions:

  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools will be closed Monday for all students due to inclement weather.
  • Baltimore City Public Schools and its central offices are closed Monday as part of the winter storm response.
  • Baltimore County Public Schools are closed both Monday and Tuesday because of hazardous conditions.
  • Carroll County Public Schools have canceled classes and all school activities Monday.
  • Cecil County schools and offices are also shut Monday due to the storm.
  • Harford County Public Schools will remain closed Monday and Tuesday with no activities planned.
  • Howard County public schools and administrative buildings will not open Monday.

In eastern Maryland’s counties, local announcements indicate widespread closures as well, with counties such as Mary’s County, Talbot County, Washington County, Wicomico County and Worcester County closing schools Monday in response to winter weather.

Some districts are combining closures with previously scheduled breaks: Charles County Public Schools noted that Monday is a planned semester break for students, but ongoing winter conditions could lead to staffing adjustments or changes in the school calendar.

State and local officials have urged families to avoid travel unless necessary and to monitor district communications for the latest information, as continuing winter conditions may lead to additional updates or extended closures later in the week.
