Multiple schools in Kentucky could close next week

KENTUCKY — Cold Weather Advisories and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across large sections of Kentucky this weekend, raising the possibility of school closures or delays on Monday as students return to class after the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory from late Saturday night through Monday morning for much of the state, including central, north central, and south central Kentucky.

Forecasters warn that very cold wind chills as low as 10–11 degrees below zero could occur, posing risks of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone exposed to the elements without proper protection.

At the same time, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through early Sunday morning in the Louisville region and surrounding areas, where snowfall of 1–3 inches is expected. Snow, even in modest amounts, can make roads slick and hazardous, especially when combined with freezing temperatures and black ice.

Parts of eastern Kentucky are also under advisories as light snow accumulations and bitter cold grip the region, with wind chills in the single digits above or below zero at times.

School districts across the Commonwealth typically consider student safety, road conditions, and bus travel hazardswhen deciding whether to close or delay classes.

With temperatures plunging Sunday night and lingering cold into Monday morning — the period when many students wait at bus stops — superintendents and transportation officials are watching conditions closely. Wet, slippery roads combined with sub-freezing temperatures could make morning commutes treacherous.

Local officials are urging residents to monitor weather updates, prepare for hazardous driving conditions, and expect announcements from school systems early Monday regarding closures or delays. Decisions often hinge on conditions at the time and forecasts overnight, but cold and snow risks have already put schools on alert for potential disruptionsto the start of the school week.

Parents are advised to check their school district’s social media pages or automated alert systems for the latest closure and delay information Sunday night and early Monday.
