KENTUCKY — Lingering impacts from a powerful winter storm that brought snow, ice and hazardous travel conditions across Kentucky have led many school districts to cancel in-person classes or implement alternate learning plans for Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. Decisions vary by district depending on weather conditions, road safety and local instructional policies.
Traditional Snow Days
Several large school systems are closed Tuesday as traditional snow days — meaning no in-person instruction and no online learning:
- Jefferson County Public Schools (Louisville) — Classes canceled Tuesday as a traditional snow day due to snow and ice; extracurricular and after-school activities are also canceled.
- Muhlenberg County Public Schools — Closed Jan. 26–28 with extracurricular activities canceled; Tuesday is part of that closure period.
Non–Traditional Instruction (NTI) Days
Some districts are using non-traditional instruction (NTI) days for Tuesday, allowing students to complete schoolwork at home with remote or paper-based assignments:
- Warren County Public Schools — Monday was a traditional snow day; the district will use NTI days for Tuesday and Wednesday, with online and remote instruction planned.
- Fayette County Public Schools — Used NTI on Monday; may continue alternate learning depending on conditions (statewide policies around NTI usage vary by district).
Regional and Other Adjustments
- In Owensboro/Daviess County area, several districts including Daviess County Public Schools and Owensboro Public Schools plan NTI days on Jan. 27, with traditional closures or mixed schedules depending on individual school policies.
- Catholic and private schools in the region have mixed plans for Jan. 27, with some observing snow days and others using NTI formats.
Reason for Closures and Instruction Changes
The decisions follow widespread winter weather that deposited snow and ice across much of Kentucky and surrounding states. Hazardous roads and continued cold prompted officials to prioritize student and staff safety with closures or remote learning provisions where available.
