Multiple schools in Illinois announce closures for Wednesday

ILLINOIS — Many schools throughout southern and central Illinois are closed or holding e-learning days Wednesday as communities continue to deal with the effects of a weekend winter storm and lingering hazardous conditions. 

Closures and Remote Instruction:

Districts in southern Illinois announced that classes will not be held in school buildings Wednesday, with many opting for e-learning or full closures

  • Akin Grade School — e-learning day
  • Anna-Jonesboro High School — e-learning day
  • Benton District 47 / Benton High School — e-learning day
  • Bethel Grade School (Mt. Vernon) — e-learning day
  • Bluford Schools — e-learning day
  • Carbondale School District 95 — e-learning day; Carbondale High School closed entirely
  • Carmi-White County Unit 5 — closed
  • Carrier Mills-Stonefort CUSD — closed
  • Several other districts — including Crab Orchard, DeSoto, Dongola, Eldorado, Farrington CCSD #99, Frankfort CUSD #168, Galatia, Harrisburg, Johnson County, Massac County Unit 1, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Pinckneyville, Trico District 176, Wayne County — reported full closures for Wednesday. 

Many additional schools — such as Field School, Grand Prairie Grade School, Hamilton County Unit 10, McClellan Grade School, Mt. Vernon School District 80, Mt. Vernon Township High School, Murphysboro CUSD 186, Opdyke-Belle Rive Grade School, Rome Grade School, Spring Garden Grade School, Summersville Grade School and Woodlawn Schools — are observing e-learning days rather than in-person classes. 

Higher Education:

Southern Illinois University Carbondale will reopen at 10 a.m., with all classes originally scheduled before that time canceled

The schedule adjustments come amid continued cold and winter weather conditions that have affected road safety and travel across much of the state. 

Parents and guardians are urged to check directly with local school districts and official school communications for the latest updates, as additional changes are possible throughout the day.
