Multiple schools in Georgia announce closures for Thursday

0

GEORGIA — In the wake of a significant winter storm that brought ice, sleet and snow to parts of Georgia this week, at least some school districts have confirmed closures or adjusted schedules for Thursday, January 29, 2026 as hazardous road conditions and cold weather continue to affect travel and safety.

Confirmed Changes for Thursday

  • Habersham County Schools announced that schools will be closed for students on Thursday, Jan. 29, citing lingering icy patches on secondary roadways that remain unsafe for buses and cars.

Weather Context and Ongoing Impacts

State officials have been responding to an aftermath of ice and cold following the winter storm, which led to a state of emergency declared through Thursday, Jan. 29. Authorities have repeatedly warned residents about dangerous travel conditions due to ice and freezing temperatures across much of North and central Georgia in recent days, even as some main roads have been treated.

News reports earlier in the week noted that multiple school districts across north Georgia and other regions responded to the storm with closures, remote learning days or delays on earlier dates (e.g., Tuesday and Wednesday) because of hazardous conditions. Those adjustments reflected ice accumulation and cold conditions that made travel and transportation unsafe for students and staff

Schedules Still Evolving

As conditions remain variable and forecasts continue to be updated, additional school districts may announce further closures, delays or remote learning plans for Thursday, Jan. 29. Families and caregivers are encouraged to check their local school district websites, district alert systems or official social media channels for final schedules and real-time updates.
