Multiple schools in Florida could close this week

FLORIDA — A powerful storm system expected to move across the southeastern United States Monday could bring severe weather to parts of Florida, raising the possibility that some schools may close or adjust schedules this week.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, widespread severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Monday as a strong cold front sweeps across the region. The system could produce damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, heavy rain, and lightning.

Forecasters say a line of storms may already be developing early Monday morning from the southern Appalachian region to the Florida Panhandle. Conditions ahead of the cold front are expected to become favorable for severe storms, including rotating thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes.

Meteorologists note that warm, moist air across the region combined with increasing atmospheric instability could allow storms to strengthen quickly. The Storm Prediction Center said some storms could produce strong tornadoes and large hail before the system moves eastward later in the day.

While the greatest tornado and wind threat is expected from parts of South Carolina through Maryland, Florida remains within the broader severe weather zone. Areas of North Florida, in particular, may see storms develop early in the day as the system approaches.

Severe weather during the morning hours can often disrupt transportation and school operations. When storms are expected during bus routes or arrival times, school districts sometimes delay opening, shift to remote learning, or cancel classes entirely as a precaution.

Any decisions regarding closures or schedule changes would likely be announced through district websites, social media, or emergency notification systems.

The storm system is expected to move off the East Coast by early Tuesday, bringing an end to the severe weather threat.
