Multiple schools in Arkansas announce closures for Wednesday

ARKANSAS — A number of school districts across Arkansas will remain closed Wednesday as hazardous road conditions and lingering effects from the recent winter storm continue to impact the state, officials said.

Districts in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley confirmed that classes will be canceled for a third consecutive day due to unsafe travel conditions, icy roads and the inability to clear school grounds and bus routes, according to local reports.

Among the districts announcing closures for Wednesday are Fayetteville Public Schools, Bentonville Public Schools, Rogers Public Schools, Springdale Public Schools, as well as systems in Van Buren, Waldron and Charleston. Officials said the extensive snow and freezing conditions from the weekend storm have made it difficult to ensure safe conditions for students and staff.

Superintendents cited concerns about secondary road conditions and bus operations, noting that many staff members must travel from areas outside their districts, where roads remain treacherous. Plans to reassess conditions later Wednesday were also mentioned by some district leaders.

Meteorologists reported significant snowfall totals and frigid temperatures statewide, with snow accumulations well above normal and forecasts showing continued cold through midweek, making quick clearing of ice and snow challenging.

Parents and guardians were urged to stay tuned to official school district communications for any updates or changes as conditions evolve.
