ALABAMA — Dangerous winter conditions prompted by a strong winter storm system have forced numerous school closures, delays and changes in learning schedules across Alabama for Monday, January 26, 2026. State and local officials cited freezing temperatures, icy roads and hazardous travel as the reasons for the disruptions.
Across central Alabama, several systems announced closures or adjustments. Alabaster City Schools and Alexander City Schools will hold e-learning or virtual learning days instead of in-person classes, and some districts such as Anniston City Schools are delaying their start times. Driver’s license offices in multiple counties are also closed Monday due to the weather.
In west Alabama, districts including Tuscaloosa City Schools and Tuscaloosa County Schools confirmed full closures for Monday after initially considering delayed starts.
Walker County Schools, Hale County Schools, Fayette County Schools, Pickens County Schools, Greene County Schools and Bibb County Schools also announced they will be closed for the day. Higher education institutions like the University of Alabama are delaying class starts.
Some parts of the state are using remote learning in place of traditional classroom instruction. Washington County Schools will conduct a virtual learning day Monday due to the icy conditions.
Conditions vary around the state, and not all systems are closed — families are advised to check with their local district for the latest updates, as decisions may shift if weather improves or worsens.
State forecasters warn that below-freezing temperatures and slick roadways could linger into the week, making travel and outdoor activities hazardous.
