Multiple power outages possible in Ohio this week

OHIO — Ohio is bracing for several rounds of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds this week as a series of storm systems track across the central United States and into the Ohio Valley.

The pattern, originally forecast as a flood risk from Texas through the Ohio Valley, now carries increasing concerns about local impacts here in Ohio — including the potential for widespread power outages

A stalled frontal boundary combined with moist air streaming up from the Gulf will push multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms into Ohio from Tuesday through Thursday.

Some areas could see several inches of rain through the week, which can saturate the soil and weaken tree roots. Saturated ground paired with strong winds and thunderstorm gusts creates ideal conditions for trees and large limbs to fall onto power lines.

Forecasters say storms may be accompanied by periods of heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds, particularly in thunderstorms expected Thursday and again Saturday. Lightning strikes and strong wind gusts are two of the leading causes of power disruptions during summer and spring storm systems.

Utility crews in Ohio and across the Ohio Valley have historically seen spikes in outage reports during similar multi-day storm patterns, especially when heavy rain, wind and lightning occur in succession.

With saturated soils and vulnerable tree limbs, even moderate gusts can bring lines down. Residents should prepare for potential outages by charging essential devices, securing loose outdoor items, and reviewing safety steps to report an outage or navigate temporary power loss.

The risk doesn’t stop with rain. Storms this weekend could produce additional gusty winds, increasing the chance of downed branches and further straining power infrastructure already stressed by wet conditions.

Officials advise Ohioans to stay updated with local forecasts.
