Multiple power outages possible across Indiana this week

INDIANA — Indiana is expected to experience an active weather pattern through this week as a series of storm systems moves across the central United States and into the Midwest, bringing repeated rounds of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds that may lead to power outages in parts of the state.

Meteorologists say warm, moisture-laden air flowing northward from the Gulf of Mexico will collide with cooler air aloft, setting the stage for showers and thunderstorms on multiple days, especially from midweek through the weekend.

While the main concern remains heavy rain and flooding in some areas, the accompanying gusty winds and lightningassociated with thunderstorms carry a significant risk for electrical service disruptions.

Strong thunderstorm winds are one of the most common causes of power outages during active weather patterns.

Gusts can uproot or snap tree limbs, which may fall onto power lines, while frequent lightning can damage electrical equipment. Repeated rounds of storms could stretch utility crews’ ability to respond quickly to outages.

In addition, soil across many parts of Indiana is already moist from recent rain, meaning tree root systems may be less stable. If saturated ground is paired with sustained winds or storm gusts, trees and large limbs are more likely to come down — again elevating the risk of local power interruptions.

Forecast models suggest that Wednesday and Thursday may bring the most widespread thunderstorms, with additional storm chances continuing into the weekend. Some storms could be strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts, heavy downpours and frequent lightning, all of which can contribute to utility disruptions.

Indiana utility companies typically prepare ahead of active weather by staging crews and monitoring conditions, but residents should also take steps to be ready in case of service interruptions. Recommended actions include keeping phones and other devices charged, having flashlights or battery-powered lights available, and knowing how to safely report an outage.

As conditions evolve, people across Indiana are encouraged to follow updates from the National Weather Service and local media for the latest timing and severity of storms expected this week.
