SOUTH CAROLINA — Multiple crashes along Interstate 85 near the Georgia–South Carolina state line has caused major disruptions Tuesday morning, leaving several people injured and shutting down traffic for miles.

According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, one of the crashes occurred in the southbound lanes near mile marker 5, just before the Old Dobbins Bridge Road exit. Authorities said all southbound lanes were blocked, while at least one northbound lane was also closed.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and two medical helicopters were called in to transport injured individuals. Officials reported that the crash involved two vehicles and resulted in multiple injuries, though the severity of those injuries has not been fully disclosed.

Traffic quickly backed up, with congestion stretching eight miles in the southbound lanes as crews worked to clear the wreckage.

A second crash was reported shortly after 10 a.m. near mile marker 6, further complicating traffic conditions in the area. Details about that collision have not yet been released.

Earlier in the morning, a separate crash involving an 18-wheeler had already shut down all northbound lanes near mile marker 8, contributing to the widespread traffic issues.

As of late morning, authorities had not released additional information about the causes of the crashes or the total number of people involved. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while emergency crews remain on scene.
