Multiple people dead following plane crash in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — A plane crash at Statesville Regional Airport in Iredell County resulted in multiple fatalities Thursday morning, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s officials said the aircraft crashed at the airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Dec. 18. Authorities did not immediately release how many people were aboard the plane or the exact number of fatalities.

Images from the scene showed the aircraft engulfed in flames following the crash. Emergency responders were dispatched to the airport as crews worked to secure the area and investigate the incident.

Statesville Regional Airport is owned by the city of Statesville and primarily serves corporate aviation. According to the city’s website, the airport provides facilities for Fortune 500 companies as well as several NASCAR teams. The airport is located near the Interstate 77 and Interstate 40 interchange, roughly 10 minutes from downtown Statesville.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and additional details are expected to be released as officials continue their inquiry.
