KENTUCKY — Multiple people have been charged after a gun was stolen from a vehicle parked on the campus of Meade County High School after school hours, according to district officials.

Meade County Superintendent Mark Martin said the firearm was taken from a vehicle that arrived on campus after dismissal Tuesday evening. The incident did not occur during the school day, and officials emphasized there was never a threat to students or staff.

In a letter sent to families Wednesday, school officials said local law enforcement was notified Tuesday night and immediately launched an investigation.

Because the theft happened after hours and posed no ongoing danger to school operations, the situation was handled directly by police.

Authorities said the investigation was completed the following day. The stolen gun was recovered, and the individuals involved were identified and charged.

According to records from the Meade County Detention Center, 18-year-old Emmit Day was arrested Wednesday. He is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and theft of a firearm. Online rosters indicate Day was a senior on the school’s football team this past season.

School leaders thanked local law enforcement for their swift response and reiterated that student and staff safety remains their top priority.

The case remains under investigation.
