Multiple Pennsylvania schools announce closures for May

PENNSYLVANIA — Most public schools across Pennsylvania are scheduled to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district academic calendars and state guidance.

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is recognized both as a federal holiday and as a mandated school holiday under Pennsylvania law. State statute specifies that schools are not to be in session on Memorial Day, reinforcing its consistent observance across school systems.

A review of school calendars from districts across the state—including Philadelphia-area and western Pennsylvania districts—confirms that May 25 is designated as “No School” or “Schools Closed” for students and staff. Additional district calendars similarly list Memorial Day as a full closure, often followed by the final days of the academic year later that same week.

For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday that results in widespread school closures across Pennsylvania. While some districts may include other non-instructional days—such as primary election day or teacher in-service days—those vary by district and are not uniformly observed statewide.

In many cases, the holiday occurs during the final stretch of the school year. Numerous Pennsylvania districts schedule their last day of classes in late May or early June, with Memorial Day falling just before the end of the academic calendar.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Pennsylvania students either return briefly to complete the school year or are nearing the conclusion of classes as districts transition into summer break.
