MICHIGAN — Most public schools across Michigan are expected to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to multiple district academic calendars reviewed statewide.
Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a federally recognized holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. School systems throughout Michigan consistently designate the day as a full closure for students and staff, with district calendars listing “Memorial Day – No School” or similar language.
A review of calendars from districts including Grand Rapids Public Schools and Lansing School District confirms that May 25 is widely observed as a non-instructional day. Some districts also extend the closure into a long weekend, further reinforcing the holiday’s consistent observance across the state.
For the month of May, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday that results in widespread school closures across Michigan. While some districts may include additional non-instructional days—such as teacher professional development days or the last day of school—these vary by district and are not uniformly observed statewide.
In many cases, the holiday occurs near the end of the academic year. Several Michigan school systems schedule their final day of classes in late May or early June, with Memorial Day falling just before the end of the school calendar.
Following the Memorial Day holiday, most Michigan students either return briefly to complete the school year or are nearing the conclusion of classes as districts transition into summer break.
