Multiple inches of snow to create travel issues in North Carolina Monday

NORTH CAROLINA — Snow is expected across parts of North Carolina beginning early Monday morning, with travel delays possible throughout the day and into Tuesday, according to multiple National Weather Service offices.

Northern Piedmont and Coastal Plain to See Snow

Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. Monday to noon Tuesday for much of the northern Piedmont and northern Coastal Plain. This includes Person, Granville, Vance, Warren, Halifax, Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Orange, Durham, Franklin, Nash, Edgecombe, Wake, Johnston, and Wilson counties, covering cities such as Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Henderson, and Rocky Mount.

These areas are forecast to receive a dusting to around 2 inches of snow, with the highest amounts expected near the North Carolina–Virginia border. Forecasters say road conditions could become slippery during both the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Northern Mountain Counties Expect Higher Totals

Higher snowfall totals are expected in parts of the mountains above 3,500 feet, particularly in Yancey, Mitchell, and Avery counties. These areas remain under a Winter Weather Advisory from 1 a.m. Monday through 1 a.m. Tuesday, with up to 3 inches, and locally 4 inches on the highest peaks. Valley areas could see around an inch of accumulation.

Black Ice Possible Early Tuesday

In addition to Monday’s snowfall, meteorologists warn that rapidly falling temperatures Monday evening could create black ice on untreated roads and sidewalks. Early Tuesday morning commuters may experience especially hazardous driving conditions.

Travel Precautions

Officials urge residents across the advisory areas to:

  • Slow down and drive with caution
  • Allow extra travel time
  • Watch for slick bridges and overpasses
  • Use extreme care walking on steps and driveways

The National Weather Service advises the public to monitor updated forecasts and check road conditions by calling 511 before traveling. Snow is expected to taper off late Monday in most locations.
