SOUTH CAROLINA — Meteorologists are closely watching a developing weather system that could impact South Carolina this weekend, with forecasters emphasizing that details remain uncertain as the storm track continues to evolve.

According to the National Weather Service, the system is expected to affect the region Saturday and Sunday. While confidence is highest in the timing of the storm and the likelihood of strong winds—particularly near the coast—forecast confidence is lower regarding snowfall and ice accumulation across the state.

Forecasters say all scenarios remain possible at this stage. One potential track could bring warmer air into South Carolina, resulting in more rain with some ice or snow possible inland. Another scenario could allow colder air to remain in place, increasing the chance for more widespread snow. A third scenario would keep the storm farther offshore, significantly limiting impacts.

In addition to precipitation concerns, the National Weather Service highlighted the potential for marine hazards along the South Carolina coast, including large waves and the possibility of coastal flooding. Strong winds are also expected to be a primary concern regardless of the storm’s final path.

Currently, the GFS model pictured above is being the most generous with snow totals showing over a foot of snow in northeastern South and at least 4+ inches for the entire state.

It’s important to note that this is just a model run and not a forecast. Things can and will change.

Officials emphasized that the final track of the storm will ultimately determine whether South Carolina experiences winter weather impacts at all. They cautioned that it is still too early to provide specific snowfall or ice forecasts, noting that the most accurate winter weather predictions are typically made within a few days of a storm’s arrival.

Residents are encouraged to closely monitor forecast updates as the weekend approaches and remain aware of changing conditions.
