Multiple inches of snow possible in parts of Ohio

OHIO — A Winter Weather Advisory remained in effect Friday, with snow expected to spread across northern and central Ohio before tapering off late tonight, according to the National Weather Service

Snow Totals:

Forecasts issued by the NWS call for additional snow accumulations of about 2 to 5 inches in most advisory areas. Locally higher amounts remain possible in spots where bands of snow persist longer, especially in northern counties and near lake-effect snow zones. Gusty winds could also lead to blowing and drifting snow, which may make drifts deeper than official totals indicate.

Timing:

Snow is expected to begin Friday morning and continue periodically through the afternoon and into evening, before tapering off late tonight. The Advisory is in place through Friday evening into Saturday morning for parts of northern and central Ohio.

Scattered snow showers and patchy blowing snow may linger into late evening, especially where northwest winds pick up behind the main precipitation shield.

Impacts:

With the steady snow and gusty winds, roads are likely to become snow-covered and slick through much of the day. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds and allow extra travel time as visibility may be sharply reduced at times in heavier bands and during blowing snow conditions.

The combination of fresh snow and wind will also make for difficult travel later into the night, particularly on rural and untreated roadways, where snow can drift rapidly.

Temperatures behind the system will remain cold, with lows well below freezing and wind chills dropping into the negative numbers over the weekend — factors that could exacerbate icy conditions on untreated surfaces.
