Multiple inches of snow possible in Indiana this weekend

INDIANA — A storm system moving across the country could bring accumulating snow to parts of Indiana late Sunday into Monday, though forecasters say several factors will determine how much, if any, snow falls across the state.

According to AccuWeather meteorologists, the storm is currently off the coast of British Columbia and is expected to move south through California on Thursday before tracking across the Rockies on Friday and into the central United States on Saturday.

As the system approaches the Midwest, it may strengthen and spread precipitation eastward. Whether that falls as snow in Indiana will depend largely on the availability of cold air and the storm’s exact path.

Meteorologists say one major concern is the potential lack of sufficiently cold air when the storm develops. Even if precipitation begins as snow higher in the atmosphere, warmer air near the surface could cause it to melt before reaching the ground, resulting in rain or a wintry mix instead.

The track of the storm will also be critical. If the system shifts farther north and west, it could draw milder air into Indiana, limiting snowfall totals. A more southerly track would increase the chance of colder air remaining in place, allowing for accumulating snow.

Forecasters caution that it is too early to determine specific snowfall amounts for Indiana, but residents should monitor updated forecasts as the weekend approaches.

In the meantime, multiple rounds of rain, snow and possibly some ice are expected to move across parts of the Midwest this week ahead of the potential late-weekend system.

Officials recommend keeping an eye on updated weather information and preparing for possible travel impacts if snow develops late Sunday into Monday.
