Multiple inches of snow possible across Virginia this weekend

VIRGINIA — Meteorologists and weather officials are closely monitoring the potential for a significant snowfall across much of Virginia this weekend as a winter storm system may bring cold air and accumulating snow to the state. Forecast confidence is growing, though key details — including exact snow amounts and timing — remain unsettled.

SNOW POTENTIAL AND FORECAST OUTLOOK

National Weather Service Graphic

Weather teams across the Commonwealth report that atmospheric conditions associated with a developing storm system could produce accumulating snow from Saturday into Sunday. Areas from northern Virginia through central and into southern parts of the state are being watched for measurable snowfall.

Meteorologists emphasize that all of Virginia has at least some chance of snow depending on the exact storm track and temperature profile. The key ingredients — cold air in place and moisture moving into the region — are aligning in forecast models, raising the possibility of the season’s most impactful snow event so far

In northern parts of the state, including the Shenandoah Valley, some weather experts are discussing scenarios in which snowfall could exceed one foot if the storm’s core passes just right.

Officials in southeast Virginia have issued weather impact alerts in recognition of the potential for hazardous conditions related to snow and wintry precipitation over the weekend.

TIMING AND UNCERTAINTY

At this stage, forecasters expect snow to develop late Saturday and continue into Sunday, though the exact onset, intensity and duration are fluid as computer models refine their solutions in the coming days.

As with winter weather setups at longer lead times, uncertainties remain in how much snow will actually fall and where the sharpest gradient between light and heavier snow might occur. Forecast confidence will increase as the storm system nears and more data are assimilated by forecasting models.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS

If accumulating snow occurs, even moderate amounts — several inches or more — could lead to slick roads, reduced visibility and dangerous travel conditions across much of the state. Snow that falls on cold ground and on untreated surfaces may stick and linger, especially if temperatures remain below freezing.

This type of winter weather situation can affect daily routines, travel and outdoor activities, particularly on major highways and secondary roads that may become snow-covered.

PREPARATION AND SAFETY

The National Weather Service and local meteorologists are urging Virginians to follow forecast updates closely this week as the situation evolves. Key preparedness steps include:

  • Monitoring forecast changes through local weather outlets.
  • Preparing snow removal equipment such as shovels and ice scrapers.
  • Planning for potential travel delays if snow begins late Saturday or Sunday.

As confidence in the forecast builds closer to the weekend, the NWS may issue formal winter storm watches or warnings for portions of Virginia if accumulating snow becomes more certain.
