Multiple inches of snow possible across Arkansas this weekend

ARKANSAS — A Winter Storm Watch is in effect across much of Arkansas in anticipation of a significant winter weather system expected Friday through Saturday night. This watch reflects rising confidence among National Weather Service forecasters that snow, sleet, and freezing precipitation could impact the state later this week.

According to the National Weather Service office in Little Rock, conditions are favorable for a winter storm to develop between Friday and Sunday.

Probabilistic forecast guidance currently suggests a 40–60 % chance of exceeding 4 inches of snow and a 30–50 % chance of exceeding 6 inches over central and northern Arkansas. Southern portions of the state are more likely to see a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow under the same system.

The Winter Storm Watch remains in place as meteorologists continue to refine timing, precipitation type, and amounts. Watches are typically issued when there is a significant possibility of winter weather hazards, including snow accumulations of 3 inches or more or freezing rain/sleet accumulations that could disrupt travel and infrastructure.

Forecasters note that very cold Arctic air is expected to settle over the state following the storm, potentially keeping snowpack and dangerous conditions in place through the weekend and into early next week.

Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for hazardous winter weather as the storm draws nearer.
