TEXAS — The National Weather Service Fort Worth/Dallas Forecast Office has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of North and Central Texas — including the Dallas-Fort Worth area — from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night as a significant winter system moves into the region.

Where the Watch Applies

The winter storm watch covers many counties across North Texas, from Montague and Wise counties in the northwest through Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, Collin, and extending southeast toward Comanche and other central counties. Cities under the watch include Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Denton, McKinney, and Graham

Forecast and Expected Impacts

Forecasters say a mix of winter precipitation — including snow, sleet, and freezing rain — is possible starting Friday afternoon and continuing through Sunday morning. Snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible in many areas, with locally higher amounts closer to the Red River, and ice accumulations between 0.10 and 0.25 inch could occur on power lines and tree limbs. Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become very hazardous during the storm.

Cold and Wind Chill Threats

Behind the precipitation, Arctic air will plunge into the state, setting up an Extreme Cold Watch beginning Saturday evening through Monday morning for much of the same area. Temperatures and wind chills are forecast to remain dangerously low, posing risks to unprotected pipes, livestock, and people exposed to the cold for extended periods.

Safety and Preparedness

Officials urge residents to prepare now for winter weather, monitor the latest NWS forecasts, and consider delaying travel during the storm period. Emergency supplies, including warm clothing, food, water, and a charged cell phone, are recommended. Motorists should be especially cautious on roadways during the watch period.

Texas is expected to see freezing rain and sleet Friday night, possibly transitioning to snow by Saturday in parts of North Texas, with similar hazardous conditions possible farther south and east.
