Multiple Georgia schools announce closures for May

0

GEORGIA — Most public schools across Georgia are expected to be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026, in observance of Memorial Day, according to academic calendars from multiple school districts statewide.

Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday in May, is a federally recognized holiday honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. School systems throughout Georgia consistently list May 25 as a holiday, with district offices closed and no classes scheduled for students. Calendar data from districts such as DeKalb County, Clayton County, and Cobb County all show Memorial Day as a designated closure.

Across Georgia, Memorial Day stands out as the only broadly observed holiday in May that results in widespread school closures. While some districts may include teacher workdays, post-planning days, or early release schedules later in the month, those dates vary by district and are not uniformly observed statewide.

In many cases, the holiday falls just after the conclusion of the academic year. Several Georgia school systems—including those in Bulloch County, Henry County, and Fulton County—schedule their last day of classes in late May, often around May 20–22, with Memorial Day occurring shortly afterward.

Following the Memorial Day holiday, most students in Georgia have already completed the school year or will not return for additional instructional days, as districts transition into post-planning periods for staff and the start of summer break.
