INDIANA — Across the Hoosier State, school districts are preparing for the annual Thanksgiving pause — a familiar rhythm for many families but one that still carries significance for students, staff, and communities alike. In particular, several districts in Indiana have confirmed that there will be no school during the week of Thanksgiving.
In Indianapolis Public Schools, for example, the calendar shows that Wednesday, November 26 through Friday, November 28 are marked as full-day “Thanksgiving Break — No School.” Similarly, the Elkhart Community Schools district lists Thursday, November 27 and Friday, November 28 (and in some cases Wednesday) as part of their Thanksgiving recess.
The Tippecanoe School Corporation calendar likewise lists Thursday and Friday of that week as “Thanksgiving Break – No School”.
These closures align with longstanding patterns in Indiana’s school systems, recognizing the traditional holiday and often starting the break ahead of the federal holiday date.
For families, this means an earlier-than-usual start to time off — which can be useful for travel plans, family gatherings, or simply a moment of rest. It also gives teachers and administrative staff a chance to reset before the winter stretch of the school year begins.
While the exact days vary by district, the key takeaway is clear: Indiana schools are taking the week of Thanksgiving seriously, and many are already off by Wednesday or Thursday — meaning students and families should plan accordingly.
With that in mind, families may want to check their specific district calendars, arrange any needed child-care or transportation adjustments, and mark the dates for the holiday break.
This year’s timing gives a bit of extra breathing room before the full holiday, and with travel or weather concerns sometimes creeping in, being ahead of the schedule means smoother transitions all around. For students wrapping up the first semester, it’s a welcome chance to pause and refresh before heading into the final months of 2025.
