Most schools in Florida to close next week

0

FLORIDA — Most schools across Florida will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday that is traditionally recognized by school districts statewide.

District officials note that the closure is part of regularly scheduled academic calendars and is not related to weather conditions.

Attention is already turning to Tuesday, however, as unusually cold weather in parts of the Florida Panhandle could impact school operations.

Forecasts indicate that some areas of the Panhandle may experience freezing temperatures, which are rare for the region.

While no widespread closures or delays have been announced for Tuesday, school districts in northern Florida are closely monitoring weather conditions.

Freezing temperatures can create hazardous road conditions in areas that are not accustomed to winter weather and lack snow-removal equipment. Concerns include slick bridges, icy roads, and unsafe conditions for school bus travel during the morning hours.

Parents and students in the Panhandle are encouraged to stay alert for updates from local school districts Monday evening and early Tuesday morning.
