KENTUCKY — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of eastern Kentucky, warning of accumulating snow, gusty winds and hazardous travel conditions beginning Monday afternoon.
The advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Monday until 8 a.m. Tuesday for Pike County, including the communities of Elkhorn City, Coal Run, Pikeville and South Williamson.
Forecasters say snow will begin during the mid-afternoon and continue into the evening, followed by snow showers and snow squalls overnight. Total snowfall of up to 2 inches is expected, with locally higher amounts possible where snow showers persist. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.
The National Weather Service also reports the advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday for Harlan and Letcher counties, including Whitesburg, Harlan, Jenkins and Cumberland.
In those areas, 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected, with higher amounts possible in more persistent snow bands. Temperatures are expected to drop into the 20s in lower elevations and into the teens above 2,500 feet overnight.
Officials warn that sudden bursts of snow may reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less, especially in snow squalls. Roads could become slick and hazardous, particularly during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use caution. Current Kentucky road conditions can be checked online at goky.ky.gov.
