Measurable snowfall possible across Georgia this weekend

GEORGIA — Forecasters are closely monitoring the potential for a winter weather event that could affect parts of Georgia late this weekend, though confidence in the forecast remains very low.

According to the National Weather Service Atlanta, a cold front is expected to move through Georgia Friday night into Saturday morning.

That system is forecast to bring light rain showers and cooler temperatures across the state. Behind it, another weather system is expected to move across the Southeast late Saturday night into Sunday, with the potential to bring snow or a wintry mix to portions of Georgia.

Meteorologists caution that there is still significant uncertainty surrounding the second system. Forecast models show a wide range of possible outcomes, from little to no winter weather impacts to more widespread snow with potentially significant effects. Because of this variability, forecasters say confidence in specific impacts remains very low at this time.

A forecast graphic from the National Weather Service shows generally low probabilities for measurable snow across Georgia on Sunday. In many areas, the chance of more than a half-inch of snow ranges from about 15 to 30 percent, with some higher probabilities indicated in parts of central and eastern Georgia. However, officials stress that these probabilities could change as the forecast becomes clearer.

Residents are encouraged to stay tuned for updated forecasts and to anticipate the possibility of travel impacts on Sunday. The National Weather Service advises following trusted weather sources as conditions and forecast details continue to evolve.
