INDIANA — A winter weather advisory has been issued for parts of Indiana, with lake-effect snow and strong winds expected to impact northern portions of the state late Sunday night through early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory applies to Elkhart County, northern La Porte County, and eastern and western St. Joseph County in Indiana. The advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Monday until 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Forecasters say lake-effect snow will develop overnight as much colder air moves into the region. Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected across the affected areas of northern Indiana. Gusty winds, with speeds reaching 45 to 50 mph, are also forecast and could lead to blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility on area roadways.
In addition, temperatures are expected to drop rapidly Sunday night, falling as much as 30 degrees within six hours. This sharp temperature decline may cause a flash freeze, turning wet roads into icy surfaces in a short period of time.
The National Weather Service warns that slippery road conditions could significantly impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, creating additional hazards. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution while traveling through the affected areas.
