KENTUCKY — A roof collapse at Latonia Elementary School on New Year’s Eve has forced the entire Covington Independent School District to shift to non-traditional instruction, with all schools moving to virtual learning.
District officials said a significant portion of the elementary school building was damaged in the collapse, including the gym area. Crews have since removed unstable walls around the affected section, leaving an entire portion of the structure gone. The collapse occurred when no one was inside the building, and students have not returned to the school since the incident.
The district said it hopes students will be able to return to in-person classes as early as next week, depending on the progress of repairs and safety assessments. While repairs are planned at Latonia Elementary, officials are also considering alternative locations should the building not be ready for students in the near future.
District leaders have not disclosed the potential alternative site but emphasized that, if needed, all students would be housed at the same facility. Additional details regarding the cause of the roof collapse and a more specific repair timeline are expected to be released before the end of the week.
