KENTUCKY — A 21-year-old inmate was found unresponsive early Thursday morning inside the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

According to LMDC officials, officers discovered the Hispanic male inmate at approximately 4:24 a.m. while serving breakfast inside the facility. The inmate had been in custody since Feb. 14.

Emergency medical personnel were called to the jail, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

An internal investigation has been launched by the LMDC Professional Standards Unit. The Louisville Metro Police Department’s Public Integrity Unit has also been notified and will conduct a review, which is standard procedure in cases involving deaths in custody.

In a statement, LMDC Chief Jerry Collins expressed condolences to the inmate’s family.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young man,” Collins said. “We are fully investigating the incident to determine the facts of this unfortunate event.”

No additional details have been released as the investigation continues.
