VIRGINIA — An investigation is underway after a 27-year-old inmate died Tuesday afternoon at the Western Virginia Regional Jail, according to officials.

Jail officials said Destiny Swain was found unresponsive in her cell on March 24. Security and medical staff began CPR and other lifesaving measures while calling 911.

Roanoke County Fire-EMS responded and continued emergency treatment, but efforts to revive Swain were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at 3:44 p.m., according to the jail.

Authorities said a full investigation is being conducted by the Roanoke County Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Officials with the jail said initial information indicates the death appears to be due to natural causes.

Swain had been booked into the jail on Friday, March 20, and was awaiting trial on three counts of felony possession of Schedule I or II narcotics.

The investigation remains ongoing.
