VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) says an inmate has died after what officials are calling an “apparent attack” by the inmate’s cell partner early Tuesday morning at Greensville Correctional Center.

According to VADOC, the incident occurred around 3:10 a.m. on November 11, when a corrections staff member called for supervisory assistance. Responding staff found one inmate on top of another inside the cell. The inmate underneath was unresponsive.

Corrections personnel began life-saving efforts until first responders arrived. Despite those efforts, the inmate was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. by a doctor.

A spokesperson for VADOC described the situation as an isolated incident and said there is no active threat to staff or other inmates. “Greensville Correctional Center is secure and there is no active threat to corrections team members or the inmate population,” the spokesperson stated.

The Department’s Office of Law Enforcement Services is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the attack.
