Identity released of 16-year-old fatally shot in Ohio

OHIO — The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified a 16-year-old boy who died after an accidental shooting in Dayton on Sunday night.

Dayton Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 700 block of Burwood Avenue around 10:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Tyron Smith, 16, with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Maj. Brian Johns.

An initial investigation revealed that Smith had arrived at the home with a semi-automatic handgun.

He and three other minors were reportedly passing the gun around to take photos and videos for social media when one of them pointed the weapon and accidentally fired, striking Smith.

Smith was transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died later that night.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, led by Dr. Kent Harshbarger, stated that the cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.

Dayton Police continue to investigate the incident.
