MICHIGAN — A winter weather advisory has been issued for a large portion of northern Lower Michigan, where light freezing rain is expected to create hazardous travel conditions overnight into Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday for counties including Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Alcona, Manistee, Wexford, Missaukee, Roscommon, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac. Forecasters say ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible.

Additional winter weather advisories are also in effect for parts of central and west central Michigan, including Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Newaygo, Mecosta and Isabella counties, where freezing rain is expected to begin late Monday evening and continue through early Tuesday afternoon.

In Bay and Midland counties, freezing rain is also forecast from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, with similar ice accumulations possible. Officials warn that even small amounts of ice can make roads, bridges and overpasses extremely slick.

The hazardous conditions are expected to impact the Tuesday morning commute. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time and use caution on icy roadways. Pedestrians are also advised to be careful on stairs, sidewalks and driveways, which could become slippery and increase the risk of falls. Some areas may also experience isolated power outages due to ice buildup.
