SOUTH CAROLINA — First responders are on the scene of a hazardous materials situation Thursday morning in Spartanburg County, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the incident is taking place near the Celanese facility along Highway 221. Multiple fire departments are also assisting at the scene.

Officials reported that a rail car showing abnormal activity prompted the response. As a precaution, local officials were contacted to help safely manage the situation.

In a statement, Celanese said there has been no incident, injuries or environmental impact, and that there is no risk to employees or the surrounding community at this time.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the situation involves ethylene, a colorless and highly flammable gas commonly used in the production of plastics.

As a result of the response, Highway 221 is closed between Mount Shoals Road and Kilgore Bridge Road.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as crews work to address the issue.
