NORTH CAROLINA — A gun was found in a vehicle parked on the campus of Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School on Thursday, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
School officials said the weapon was discovered in a car located in the school’s parking lot. Authorities responded and seized the weapon, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the incident.
In a message sent to families, Principal Phillip Johnson said there was no threat to students or staff at any time and no injuries were reported.
Johnson said the weapon remained inside the vehicle and never entered the school building.
“Law enforcement officers seized the weapon, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating the incident,” Johnson said in the statement. “Please know that there was no threat to students or staff, and no injuries occurred.”
School officials reminded families that weapons are prohibited on school campuses and that bringing any type of weapon onto school property violates North Carolina law and may result in legal consequences.
The message also encouraged students to report threats or weapons to a trusted adult or anonymously through the Say Something app.
Authorities have not released additional details about the incident, and the person who brought the weapon onto campus has not been identified. The investigation remains ongoing.
