GEORGIA — A 16-year-old student was arrested Thursday after a handgun was discovered during a school safety search at Statesboro High School, authorities said.
The search was conducted by Statesboro Police Department officers and K9 units from both the department’s Special Investigations division and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office.
School administrators coordinated with officers to help ensure student safety by identifying contraband or weapons on campus.
The student was taken into custody and transported to a Regional Youth Detention Facility. He faces charges of carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, a felony, and possession of a handgun by a person under 18.
Police say the investigation into how the student obtained the firearm is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Kyle Wright at 912-764-9911 or submit an anonymous tip through the department’s website at statesboropd.com.
