Group of West Virginia lawmakers urge governor to suspend fuel taxes for 90 days

WEST VIRGINIA — The West Virginia Freedom Caucus is calling on Patrick Morrisey to suspend state fuel taxes for 90 days, citing rising costs for residents across the state.

In a statement, the group said it wants the governor to immediately suspend all state fuel taxes, including those on gasoline, diesel and heating oil.

“When government makes everything more expensive, the least it can do is get out of the way,” said Freedom Caucus Chairman S. Chris Anders.

The caucus said West Virginians are facing increasing financial pressure from multiple directions, including higher grocery prices, rising utility costs and increased fuel prices.

“This isn’t complicated,” said Delegate Laura Kimble. “Families are hurting, and the government is still taking its cut on every gallon.”

The group also pointed to inflation as a contributing factor to financial strain on households.

“For years, inflation driven by reckless federal spending has eroded the purchasing power of working families. Now, after a harsh winter, many are simply trying to catch up,” Kimble added. “They don’t need another program. They don’t need another promise. They need relief – and they need it now.”

Members of the caucus are urging the governor to use his constitutional authority to declare an emergency and suspend the taxes.

“Government shouldn’t profit when people are struggling to get to work or heat their homes,” said Freedom Caucus Secretary Henry Dillon. “This is a direct, immediate way to return money to the people.”

“Cut the tax. Let people keep their money,” said Senator Craig Hart. “West Virginians can’t wait.”
