Georgia woman arrested for taking more than $7,000 in fake child support payments

GEORGIA — A Coweta County woman was arrested on New Year’s Eve after deputies said she fraudulently obtained thousands of dollars in child support payments for a child that was not hers or the victim’s.

According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Brya Hardy, 18, of Newnan, requested more than $7,000 from a man she was in a relationship with, claiming the money was needed for child support. Deputies said Hardy told the man that she had a child who was his and asked him to provide financial support.

Investigators later determined that the child was not related to Hardy or the alleged victim, according to the sheriff’s office.

The investigation began in early December after the victim reported the suspected scam to deputies. The victim’s name was not released.

Authorities said the investigation remains active. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office at 770-253-1502.
