GEORGIA — All Sumter County Schools were closed Thursday after a smoke-related incident tied to an apparent electrical fire prompted safety concerns, according to school officials.

The situation was first reported at Sumter County Primary School, where smoke from an external source affected the building. Initially, classes were canceled for Pre-K through first grade students out of an abundance of caution.

Shortly after, district officials expanded the closure to include all schools in Sumter County for the day.

Sumter County Sheriff Eric Bryant confirmed that an electrical fire occurred at one of the primary school facilities. Authorities said the incident led to immediate action to protect students and staff.

No injuries have been reported, and officials have not released details regarding the extent of any damage.

Despite the closure for students, teachers were instructed to report to the high school by 9 a.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. School officials are urging parents and guardians to stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
