NORTH CAROLINA — Four people were injured Wednesday morning when a coffee truck exploded in a parking lot off University Parkway, according to city officials.
Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Gray said the explosion happened just before 7:27 a.m. The Winston-Salem Police Department bomb squad, which was already nearby for training, heard the blast and immediately responded to help the victims. The conditions of those injured have not yet been released.
Gray said 31 firefighters also responded to the scene.
The explosion occurred as students and families were arriving at Wake Forest University for move-in day. Wake Forest University Police Major Jamie Herring said no students or staff were injured, but traffic near Joel Coliseum was rerouted.
Parents and students were directed to enter the Coliseum lot through Shorefair Drive to Deacon Boulevard and park in the Sierra Mist lot, while other entrances remained closed.
Officials said move-in day activities are continuing as scheduled. The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.
