FLORIDA — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper died Wednesday after suffering a medical emergency while participating in training at the FHP Training Academy, officials said.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Trooper Michael Diego experienced the emergency during a competitive process for the agency’s Criminal Interdiction Unit. He was transported for medical care, but despite lifesaving efforts, he died at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with loved ones by his side.
Diego joined the Florida Highway Patrol in 2021 and was assigned to both the Fort Pierce and Fort Myers districts during his service.
FHP leadership described Diego as a dedicated trooper who “exemplified what it means to be an American and one of Florida’s Finest,” noting that he lived a life of service and protection to others. Officials also expressed gratitude to first responders, medical teams, and fellow troopers who assisted during the emergency.
He is survived by his mother, sister, and fiancé.
