FDA issues tuna recall affecting Ohio stores

OHIO — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of canned tuna products, including those sold at Kroger and Trader Joe’s locations in Ohio.

The recall, issued by Tri-Union Seafoods, is due to a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull-tab lid, which could compromise the can’s seal, leading to leaks or potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that causes botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.

The affected products include canned tuna sold under the Trader Joe’s and Genova brands. Ohio stores carrying the recalled items include:

• Trader Joe’s label – Sold at Trader Joe’s locations across Ohio.
• Genova 5-ounce cans – Sold at Kroger, Walmart, and other retailers in various states.

Customers are urged not to consume the recalled products, even if they appear normal.

While no illnesses have been reported, the FDA advises anyone experiencing symptoms of botulism—such as difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, or trouble breathing—to seek immediate medical attention.

Consumers who purchased the recalled tuna should check the can codes and “Best if Used By” dates listed in the recall notice.
